Are Huntsman Spiders dangerous?

Greedy Gecko has provided spider control throughout SA from 1996 and WA from 2004. Australia has many venomous spiders. These are located throughout the whole continent. The most common ones are: Huntsman Spider, Black House Spider, Red Back Spider, Wolf Spider and the White Tail Spider. The CSIRO has published in 2017 “A field Guide to Spiders of Australia” features 836 species within Australia.  There is an estimate of approximately 10,000 species of spiders in Australia with only 3,600 having been described. Most spiders use venom to immobilise their pray but do not deliberately attack humans. The only aggressive spider in Australia is the Funnel Web Spider. Although there is sensationalised reports made in the media, since 1979 there has been no deaths from spider bites within Australia that has been substantiated by coronial evidence.

The most prolific species of spider that is pest related in our experience is the black house spider. These have a high rate of infestation. Left untreated, they will infest all areas of a domestic or commercial property. They have a funnel like web (although not a funnel web spider) usually located under verandahs, around window frames, clothes lines, around light fittings and even in and around kids play equipment. See here for photos of a black house spider on a baby’s swing. This series of photos show when we spray the spiders web, the vibrations are confused as insect activity. They then enter the web to search for insects that might have been caught. This where the treatment will take affect. Even though they look scary, the Black House Spider is quite timid and will quickly retract into its web when threatened. The video below shows if you don’t treat spiders (black house spiders) on the first sight of activity, the issue will turn into an infestation. Service recommendation is: General Insect Treatment.

How common are Red Back Spiders in Australia?

Also known as the Australian Black Widow Spider, the Red Back is believed to originate in South Australia or parallel to Western Australia. It his found throughout all of Australia (see map below) and has migrated to parts of Asia, New Zealand and individuals have been found in the UK, Iran, UAE and Belgium. They produce a long stringy web that is usually attached to the ground, to catch crawling insects. The nests are commonly found under outdoor furniture, under the top capping of pot plants, under outdoor BBQ’s but can also be found under verandahs or around external window frames. Under the lids of out door dunny’s and in letter boxes are also common area where Red Back Spiders are found. It is known Red Back Spiders are poor house keepers and their webs often have debris in their webs.

Are Wolf Spiders Poisonous / Dangerous

The wolf spider in Australia produce venom and can inject if continually provoked. They are known to be extremely fast moving and chase their pray rather than using a web. They can be miss identify as the closely looking grass spider. They have wide distribution and are wanderers hunting alone. Their habitat includes garden sheds, garden beds, around doors, pot plants, windows and garages. They are rarely are found in high areas e.g. under verandahs or on ceilings like other spiders such as the Huntsman, Red Back or Black House spiders. Wolf spider bites can be painful and cause nausea, dizziness and in sever cases vomiting but are not to be known to inflict serious damage.

Environmentally Friendly Pest Control

We practice environmentally friendly pest control techniques. For our general insect service, we use a pump action or electric powered backpack, not a petrol operating pump with long hoses. This allows us to provide a precision application (see here) that won’t leave marks and residue on your external windows.  We also use a water based synthetic Pyrethroid that is 100% pet safe and we can even use it on plants. (as shown in video below) It’s a odourless and colourless product that is biodegradable, so it doesn’t accumulate in the environment. This also allows the property owner to remain on site but due to health and safety, we do recommend all persons move outside while we treat inside the building.

The internal areas of the building will become damp and wet area floors e.g. kitchens & bathrooms will hold moisture. The ambient temperature will determine when you can re-enter the building (see video here).
